the sun halo in Cebu today (5/7/10) [taken by an employee from Lear]
The whole office has been in awe today! The sun appeared to look like an alien invasion and it was directly at the top of our office building. If it was an alien invasion and when those aliens decide to kill Earthlings, then we would be on the top list, but luckily it is just an effect of ice crystals messing up with the light from the sun and also because of the fast approaching summer solstice.
People immediately Googled when the news broke out about the creepy-yet-amazing-looking sun today. And this is what Wikipedia said about the phenomenon:
A halo (also known as a nimbus, icebow or Gloriole) is an optical phenomenon produced by ice crystals creating colored or white arcs and spots in the sky. Many are near the sun or moon but others are elsewhere and even in the opposite part of the sky. They can also form around artificial lights in very cold weather when ice crystals called diamond dust are floating in the nearby air.
There are many types of ice halos. They are produced by the ice crystals in cirrus clouds high (5–10 km, or 3–6 miles) in the upper troposphere. The particular shape and orientation of the crystals is responsible for the type of halo observed. Light is reflected and refracted by the ice crystals and may split up into colors because of dispersion. The crystals behave like prisms and mirrors, refracting and reflecting sunlight between their faces, sending shafts of light in particular directions.
Atmospheric phenomena such as halos were used as part of weather lore as an empirical means of weather forecasting before meteorology was developed.
Other common optical phenomena involving water droplets rather than ice crystals include the glory and the rainbow.

And what is summer solstice? Wikipedia answered:
The Summer Solstice occurs exactly when the Earth’s axial tilt is closest to the sun at its maximum of 23° 26′. Though the Summer Solstice is an instant in time, the term is also colloquially used like Midsummer to refer to the day on which it occurs. Except at the equator (where all days have 12 hours of daylight) and in the polar regions (where daylight is continuous for half of the year), the day on which the Summer Solstice occurs (in June in the Northern Hemisphere, in December in the Southern Hemisphere) is the day of the year with the longest period of daylight. Thus the seasonal significance of the Summer Solstice is in the reversal of the gradual shortening of nights and lengthening of days.
At the Tropic of Cancer (23°26′N) and all points to the north, and at the Tropic of Capricorn (23°26′S) and all points to the south, the sun also reaches its highest position in the sky on the day of the Summer Solstice. However, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, the highest sun position does not occur at the Summer Solstice, since the sun reaches the zenith here and it does so at different times of the year depending on the latitude of the observer. Depending on the shift of the calendar, the Summer Solstice occurs some time between December 21 and December 22 each year in the Southern Hemisphere, and between June 20 and June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere.
The word solstice derives from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).

The halo is formed by sunlight entering horizontally-oriented flat hexagon ice crystals through a vertical side face and leaving through the near horizontal bottom face (plate thickness does not affect the formation of the halo).
Formation of the halo requires that the sun be very high in the sky, at an elevation of 58° or more, and that the cirrus cloud or haze contains relatively large plate-shaped ice crystals.
I know Wikipedia is so brilliant and all but I just understood half of what is written there.

If the sun is very high (which happens around times of the summer solstice or nearing the summer solstice) and you have a cirrus cloud in the sky then you could have that amazing sun halo phenomenon!!!

If you are looking for a place to hang out with the gang then this place is absolutely purrrfect!!! Bubble Bee Tea House offers mediocre and overpriced food and drinks but they make it up with their super duper amazing A-M-B-I-A-N-C-E. Their taro tea is priced between 90-105 pesos, the food.. hmmm.. never mind the price, be surprised. The price is justifiable, I mean, you could stay in the place for hours and hours, doing whatever you want to do as long as it is legal, so it is just right to have those prices. The place really caters to ‘barkadas’ since they offer free games. You could choose between playing cards, staring at your colored-plastic-circle being eaten by that large snake in Snakes & Ladders, or palpitating over getting that specific colored block in Stacko-Uno (our favorite!). Back to the ambiance, Bubble Bee is a happy place! You will be surrounded with colors and lights but they are not soooo glaring that it would make the place tacky, it is a chic place. They accept bookings and reservations too!! Weee!!

Eat all you can! The second best eat-all-you-can restaurant in Cebu. It’s only 199 and that is inclusive of drinks (forgot if it was bottomless or not, but who cares!). Best thing about them is that they serve quite decent food… In my foodie dictionary, decent in an eat-all-you-can restaurant means that the food doesn’t look cooked the day before and that could mean one thing, it tastes good. They serve crab legs! Bad thing is that they don’t accept reservations for less that 10 persons…

A very decent place. If you are into ambiance and cheap but sumptuous food then this is the place for you. When we went there, the service was good. Well, I always have this theory that if you treat nicely whoever serves your food then they would be nice to you too. So we were nice at that time… Best thing about the place… Cheaper! What you get in more high-end restaurants, you could get it here much cheaper.

If you have been fiercely threatened, thoroughly blackmailed or vehemently terrorized of learning Nihongo then you will probably need to remember these websites:
japanese-lesson.com. I love the design and the materials are very good. Best way to learn the basics from this site.
Japanesepod101. Never really explored the site but it has good reviews. The downside is you need to pay for some of the advanced podcast lessons. If you like to listen while learning then this is the best thing for you.
Jim Breen’s Japanese Dictionary. If all other japanese online translator fails then go to Jim Breen’s and you will get what you want (Hopefully!). It’s usability level is low but then the effiency level is impressive. Must be bookmarked! That’s what I’ve got so far… Will be updating this post if I run into more informative and cool sites.

9.) Magpagwapa ug gwapo na gamay. Hahahahaha!!!

10.) Walay-tugpa-pero-blooming-gihapon look taga buntag.

Magsilog ko ron or dili?
Kini ang pangutana nga naglutaw-lutaw sa akong gigutom nga brain samtang nagsakay sa jeep. Pero dili naman sad ni angay ikahibong… Pagkaon ra man jud ug si R (aayyyyeee) ang pirmi pulutan sa akong mga brain cells samtang nagtagay sulod sa akong skull…
So mao to, naug sa jeep, hesitate gamay if mupalit ug silog, den nakadecide nga dili nalang, so nilakaw ug mga 60 steps padung sa building… Ug sa dihang paglingi nako sa Tita Julie’s Fastfood… Whaaaaa!!! Gisungog jud ko sa kapalaran.. Open ang Julie’s!!!! Pishti oi! Naka-decide na gani ko sungogon pa jud!
Mao to, hunong sa makadiyot ug diritso sulod sa Julie’s. “Mga pila ka minutes ang silog Miss?”, mao ni akong pangutana kay hapit na bya ang time, bawal nako magviolate ron kay duha na akong violation, if mapun-an yataps na jud ko… “Mga 3-5 minutes ra Maam.”, ang tubag sa maabiabihon nga tindera. Sa walay pagduha-duha, order dayon ug cornsilog (corned beef silog).
Malipayon ko nga nisakay sa elevator padung ofis, excited na mukaon ug silog. Pag-abli nako sa akong styro, ayyyy! unsa mani oi! murag wala man lang butangi ug effort ang pagluto sa akong silog. Ang egg kay wala nabuo ang yellow den ang corned beef kay murag walay life. Pero mutuo man jud ko sa kasabihan nga ‘Do not judge a book by it’s cover.’ so naa jud possibility nga lami ni… Nagpanilap nga gihungit nako ang usa ka kutsara nga worth of food ug nakurat jud ko… Toinks! Walay lami! Azzzin!!!
Mga 2 years naman jud ko sa IT Park, den murag almost tanang namaligya ug affordable silog sa area nga duol sa Skyries 1 kay nakan-an nana nko. According to my taste bud, mao ni ang rating sa mga silog nga akong natilawan:
1.) i-Grill sa Skyries 1. For 50 million dollars, sulit na kaayo!!! Lami-an jud ko sa ilang hotsilog (hotdog silog).
2.) Silog sa kilid sa Skyries. Ambot unsa name ani nga silogan, tag 50 lang gihapon ang silog nga uban except sa kanang mga special silog. If take out kay add lang ka ug 7 pesos kay dili man sila manghatag ug styro for free tawn.
3.) To be discovered pa…
4.) Wala pay nakit-an akong taste buds…
